April’s film night ‘The Lemon Tree‘ is a moving drama portraying a Palestinian widow who takes on the might of the Israeli government when her lemon orchard is seized because it poses a security risk to her new neighbour – the country’s defence minister.

A 2008 Israeli film directed by Eran Riklis, starring Hiam Abbass, Ali Suliman and Danny Leshman.

The film describes the legal efforts of a Palestinian widow to stop the Israeli Defense Minister, her next-door neighbour, from destroying the lemon trees growing on her family’s farm. At the same time, she develops a human bond with the Minister’s wife.

The film achieved critical success and received several nominations for awards at the 21st European Film Competition.

The film is based on a true story, where trees were finally uprooted in the security interests of Shaoul Motaz, Israeli Defense Minister from 2002 t0 2006.
